How to Write an Expository Essay

EXPOSITORY ESSAY
An expository essay is a type of essay in which the purpose of the author is to inform the reader of their topic. An expository essay is written in the third person. 


INTRODUCTION
  • introduces the general topic of what you will be explaining in your essay
  • does not yet get into specifics of your topic
  • discusses any background information regarding the topic
  • state thesis
  • use the introduction to grab the attention of the reader
Ex. of attention grabber: Of all the children who call Afghanistan home, "between 21 and 25 percent of Afghan children are part of the labor force"(Marino 1).
THESIS
  • state your position on the topic that you will support with evidence in your body paragraphs 
  • will reflect a judgment that a writer has made

 BODY PARAGRAPHS
  • the bulk of what you are writing about and analyzing
  • specifically addresses the topic of what you are writing 
  • provide and cite evidence when needed
  • each of the body paragraphs should cover a separate point that develops the thesis and should only cover that one point for each paragraph
Ex. of citing evidence: Of all the children who are required to work, "only half of children involved in child labor attend school"(Matta 1).

How to cite evidence

CONCLUSION
  • restate thesis
  • bring all your thoughts and ideas to a close
  • conclude with something that makes the reader think further about your topic
  • make sure to re-address your topic
  • do not bring up new thoughts or ideas in conclusion
How to conclude your essay

SENTENCE STRUCTURE/WORD CHOICE/GRAMMAR
  • sentences should make sense and not confuse the reader or bring them off topic
  • use words that will only express your thoughts even further, not words that will bring your essay off topic
  • use correct spelling, punctuation, and capitalization 
  • use transitions when switching to a different topic of your thesis
  • use as many paragraphs and sentences as needed to write your expository essay
